Start With the Ring, Not the Rulebook

That variety makes choosing easier once you decide what matters most to you: material, gemstone, fit or design.

Crystal Rings: Let the Stone Take the Lead

Some rings begin with the gemstone.

Amethyst, Black Onyx, Labradorite, Moonstone, Tigers Eye, Clear Quartz and Lapis Lazuli all appear in current or recently indexed HIH ring designs, depending on availability.

The setting can change the personality of the stone dramatically.

A gemstone band places the crystal itself around much of the finger, making colour and natural variation the main feature. A silver-set ring frames one stone more traditionally. Open brass designs may use a gemstone at one end and a spiral, leaf or other motif at the other.

Natural gemstones can vary in colour, banding, inclusions, flash and pattern. Tigers Eye may show stronger or softer golden bands; Labradorite may reveal its colour shift differently from one angle to another; Black Onyx offers a much more solid dark appearance.

925 Silver or Silver-Toned Brass?

These are not the same material, and the distinction matters.

925 sterling silver contains 92.5% silver and is used across the dedicated silver ring collection. Current designs include natural gemstone settings in Moonstone, Black Onyx, Quartz, Labradorite, Lapis Lazuli and Tigers Eye.

White brass, on the other hand, is used on a number of HIH rings to create a cooler silver-toned appearance. On current product pages, HIH describes this as brass with a silver coating or silver-toned finish.

A white-brass ring may therefore look silver in colour without being sterling silver.

If material matters to you, check the individual product details rather than relying only on appearance.

Brass Rings Have More Room to Misbehave

Brass works particularly well for the more unusual part of this collection.

Current designs include snakes, feathers, mandalas, leaves, spirals, circles, angel motifs, dragons and other open or sculptural forms. Some are warm yellow brass, while others use a cooler white-brass finish.

Many are adjustable, which allows designs to open around the finger rather than forming a completely closed traditional band.

That flexibility suits bohemian and symbolic designs especially well because the ring does not need a conventional central gemstone setting.

Sometimes the metal itself is the entire point.

A double spiral or curling vine does not need a crystal added simply to justify its existence.

What Does “Adjustable Ring” Mean?

An adjustable ring usually has an open section that allows the band to be altered slightly for fit.

This can be especially useful when exact sizing is difficult, but adjustable does not mean endlessly bendable.

Make small, gentle changes rather than repeatedly pulling the ring open and squeezing it closed. Repeated bending can weaken metal over time, particularly around fine or decorative sections.

A sized ring works differently. It has a fixed circumference and should be chosen according to the size information supplied on the product page.

Gemstone band rings strip the idea of a ring back to stone and shape.

Rather than placing one gemstone into a metal setting, the ring itself is formed from polished gemstone material.

Amethyst, for example, turns the entire visible ring into violet crystal rather than giving you one small central Amethyst.

Gemstone bands can also feel more substantial than a fine metal ring because the whole ring has to maintain enough material to remain structurally sound.

They are worth choosing when the crystal itself is what you want to see most.

Spoon Rings: Jewellery With a Previous Life

Spoon rings have a completely different character from factory-cast jewellery.

The design comes from reshaping decorative spoon or cutlery-style metal into a wearable ring, allowing floral, ornamental and vintage patterns to become part of the band.

Some of HIH's current spoon-ring designs are handmade in Cape Town from EPNS, or electroplated nickel silver.

That creates an appealing combination of vintage pattern, repurposed form and local craft.

Because handmade pieces can show small variations, they should not necessarily be expected to look machine-identical.

Wooden Rings Change the Whole Mood

Wooden rings replace shine and gemstone sparkle with grain, texture and natural warmth.

Wood also behaves differently from metal.

When a motif has a specific cultural or religious history, its meaning should be understood in that context rather than turning every symbol into generic “spiritual jewellery”.

Other designs are simply botanical, fantasy-inspired or decorative.
