That means a stone shouldn't automatically be labelled Imperial Topaz merely because it is yellow, golden or expensive.

That sounds exceptionally durable—and in terms of scratching, it is.

However, Topaz also has pronounced basal cleavage.

A sharp blow in the wrong direction can cause the stone to split.

This is an excellent example of the difference between hardness and toughness.

Hardness describes resistance to scratching.

Toughness describes resistance to breaking and chipping.

So treat Yellow Topaz with more care than its Mohs 8 rating might initially suggest.

Within crystal traditions, Yellow Topaz is commonly associated with confidence, abundance, optimism, joy, intention and personal motivation.
